Filtration
Particles are driven through membrane by physical pressure; delivery of water nutrients to tissues & removal of waste from collaries in kidneys
Difusion
Net movment of partices from place of high concentration toplace of lower conentration; gas exchange in lungs, nutrient absorption in the digestive system
Osmosis
Net flow of water through a selectively permeable membrane; gas exchange in lungs, nutrient absorption in the digestive system
Facilitated diffusion
Carrier moves solute down in concentration gradient; no ATP consumption
Facilitated diffusion
Transport of glucose and amino acids into cells, water cells (aquaporins)
Primary active transport
Carrier moves solute through a membrane up its concentration gradient ; ATP consumption
Secondary active transport
Carrier moves solute through membrane, but only uses ATP indirectly; Na-glucose transported
Hypertonic
if its solute concentration is higher than that inside the cell, and the solutes cannot cross the membrane; solutions with a high osmotic pressure.
Hypotonic
If the solute concentration outside the cell is lower than inside the cell, and the solutes cannot cross the membrane; solutions having a lower osmotic pressure
Isotonic
there is no net water movement, so there is no change in the size of the cell; solutions having equal osmotic pressures
