It started with Sen. Joe McCarthy giving a speech in Wheeling, WV. During the speech he claimed that he had a list of communists working in the U.S. gov. He also accused the U.S. army of being infiltrated by the “Reds.” He smeared his critics. This capitalized on the anxiety about commie subversion. U.S. senate voted to censure him.
