What is a cell?
The basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms.
Who introduced the term 'cell'?
Robert Hooke in 1665.
What are the two main types of cells?
Eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells.
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A cell that has a well-defined nucleus enclosed by a nuclear membrane.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A cell that lacks a membrane-bound nucleus.
Name three types of cells in the human body.
Nerve cells, muscle cells, blood cells.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It is selectively permeable and controls the passage of materials into and out of the cell.
What is cytoplasm?
A jelly-like fluid in which cellular processes occur.
What is the role of the nucleus in a cell?
It contains genetic material and controls cell functions.
What do ribosomes do?
They help in protein synthesis.
What is the function of mitochondria?
They are involved in energy production.
What does the cell theory state?
All living organisms are composed of cells. 2) The cell is the basic unit of life. 3) Cells arise from pre-existing cells.
What is a lysosome?
A membrane-bound vesicle filled with digestive enzymes.
What is the difference between multicellular and unicellular organisms?
Multicellular organisms are made up of more than one cell, while unicellular organisms consist of only one cell.
What is a cell wall?
A hard, elastic, porous covering that provides support and protection to plant cells.
What are vacuoles?
Fluid-filled bodies of various shapes that usually contain storage products.
What is the endoplasmic reticulum?
A network of interconnecting membranous structures filled with fluid; covering most part of the cytoplasm.
What is the Golgi body?
An organelle that modifies and packages proteins, discovered by scientist C. Golgi.
What is the significance of chromosomes?
They are thread-like structures made of chromatin that contain genetic material and are visible during cell division.
What are plastids?
Organelles found in most plants that are absent in animals.
