Extraction
The process of selectively partitioning or separating components between two immiscible liquids in contact.
Acid-Base Extraction
A method to separate compounds based on their acidic or basic properties, converting them to salts to facilitate partitioning.
Separatory Funnel
A laboratory glass apparatus used to separate liquids that do not mix, based on density.
Partition Coefficient (Kd)
A ratio that describes the distribution of a compound between two immiscible solvents, used to determine solubility.
Solid-Liquid Extraction
A method of extracting compounds from solid materials into a liquid solvent.
Liquid-Liquid Extraction
A technique for separating compounds based on their solubility in two different immiscible liquids.
Diethyl Ether
An organic solvent commonly used for extractions due to its ability to dissolve a range of organic compounds.
Melting Point (MP)
The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid; used to identify pure compounds and assess separation success.
Percent Recovery
A measurement of the efficiency of a separation process, indicating the amount of desired product obtained relative to the amount initially present.
Extraction Solvents
Solvents used in extractions that should be immiscible with water and effective at dissolving target compounds.
