statistics
a collection of procedures and principles for gaining and analyzing information to educate people and help them make better decisions when faced with uncertainty.
descriptive statistics
consists of methods for organizing and summarizing information. There is no generalized conclusion. RAW Data is presented in a useful format.
Inferential Statistics
consists of method for drawing and measuring the reliability of conclusions about a population based on information obtained from a sample of the population. You are able to learn from the sample and make a conclusion.
Population
The collection of all individuals or items under consideration in a statistical study
Sample
That part of the population from which information is obtained
Observational Study
Researchers simply observe characteristics and take measurements, observe whatever the data gives you
Designed Experiment
researchers impose treatments and controls, and then observe characteristics and take measurements

obtaining information for the entire population of interest. Often not conducted due to the amount of time it takes, the amount of money it costs, and its impracticality.
simple random sampling
a sampling procedure for which each possible sample of a given size is equally likely to be the one obtained.

representative sample
should reflect, as closely as possible, the characteristics of the population under consideration.
sampling with replacement
randomly pick an item from a group, record its details and return it to the group before making the next pick (ex. rolling a dice, flipping a coin)
sampling without replacement
item selected from the population is not replaced/put back.
