At Royal Mail we need to work in a systematic way, to show precision and to follow processes and procedures. This enables us to create ‘trust at the doorstep’ for our customers. Tell me about a role you have worked in where it was essential to follow a set approach.
Remember:
Code Ninjas
Follow teaching process
Guide, don't give answers
Student learned independently
If asked, you'd naturally say:
"At Code Ninjas we have a teaching process we're expected to follow. Rather than giving students the answer, we guide them through the problem. I followed that approach with a student who was stuck, and by the end they understood it themselves."
Give an example of a time when you worked in a team where there were a range of perspectives
Situation: Lewis-Manning Hospice shop.
Task: Work with volunteers and staff.
Action: Listened, communicated, respected different viewpoints.
Result: Team worked efficiently and customers received good service.
Situation: At the Lewis-Manning Hospice shop, we were rearranging the shop floor and deciding where to display a new batch of donated items. Some volunteers wanted to put the higher-value items near the entrance to attract customers, while others thought everyday items should go there because they sold more quickly.
Task: We needed to organise the display in a way that would benefit the shop while getting everything ready before opening.
Action: I listened to both sides and understood why each group felt their approach was best. Rather than pushing one opinion, I suggested using the front display for the items we expected to attract the most attention while placing the everyday items close by so customers would naturally browse both sections. I then helped set everything up so we were ready on time.
Result: The team agreed on the approach, we finished before opening, and everyone worked together without any disagreement. It reinforced that considering different perspectives helps a team make better decisions.
Our values are 'be positive, be brilliant' and 'be part of it'. Describe a time when you took responsibility for your own behaviour and actions.
The interviewer wants to know whether you:
Admit mistakes instead of blaming others.
Take ownership of your work.
Learn from your actions.
Do the right thing even when it's difficult.
While helping a student at Code Ninjas, I realised I'd explained a concept in a way that was too complicated, and they were becoming more confused. Instead of continuing, I recognised that my explanation wasn't working and took responsibility by changing my approach. I broke the problem into smaller steps and used simpler examples that matched the student's level. They were then able to understand the task and continue independently. It taught me that if something isn't working, it's important to adapt rather than blame the student
