“Okay so like… let me tell you something about prosody, because honestly… it’s kinda the main character of reading. So basically, prosody is the drama of reading. Like if you’re reading in a flat, boring, robot voice… yeah, no. That’s not it. It’s actually called the ‘music of language’ — which sounds fancy, but really it just means your voice needs to go up and down, show emotion, pause at the right times… you know, actually sound human. And schools? They care A LOT about this. Because if you’re reading with expression, it basically proves you understand what you’re reading. If you’re not… that’s a bit suspicious. So here’s the tea. Prosody includes things like pitch — so your voice rising and falling — stress, like what words you emphasise… and don’t get that wrong because it can literally change the meaning. Then there’s timing, like how fast or slow you read… pausing, which PLEASE use punctuation… and phrasing, so your sentences actually make sense. Because without prosody? You sound like a Year 1 reading robot. No emotion, no flow… and honestly, probably not much understanding either. But WITH prosody? You sound confident, expressive, and like you actually get it. Your brain processes the meaning better too. And here’s the biggest giveaway… you can’t really fake prosody. If you don’t understand the sentence, your voice will expose you. So yeah — prosody is the difference between just reading words… and actually performing and understanding the text.”
