Definition of Prosody
- Prosody: An umbrella term for various ways in which vocal tone can be modulated, encompassing elements such as:
- Tone
- Body language
- Intonation - Conveyed through:
- Fluctuations in pitch
- Variations in loudness
- Length of syllables - Function: Expresses a broad spectrum of feelings and attitudes, rather than just the literal meaning of words.
Historical Context
- John Hughlings Jackson (late 1870s): Noted that patients with left-hemisphere lesions could still convey information using prosody.
- Right Hemisphere's Role: Plays a crucial part in modulating the melody of speech.
- Research Findings: Prosody processing is heavily reliant on the right hemisphere, though some functions are processed in the left hemisphere as well.
Types of Prosody
Emotional Prosody
- Concerns the modulation of intonation to convey feelings and attitudes:
- Feelings: Happiness, sadness, anger, fear, etc.
- Attitudes: Sympathy, politeness, dominance, sarcasm, etc.
Linguistic Prosody
- Modulates intonation to signal linguistic distinctions in:
- Syntactic Domain: Differentiates between types of sentences (declarative vs. interrogative).
- Lexical Domain: Indicates whether a word functions as a noun/verb or an adjective/compound noun.
- Tonal Domain: Utilizes pitch variation to distinguish word meanings, particularly in tonal languages like Mandarin.
- Example: The syllable “ma” in Mandarin can have four different meanings based on tone:
- High level tone: "mother"
- Rising tone: "numb"
- Tailing-rising tone: "horse"
- Tailing tone: "scold"
Neural Mechanisms of Emotional Prosody Perception
- Emotional Intelligence: The ability to differentiate types of emotional prosody and understand moods through tone of voice.
- Key Brain Regions Involved:
- Right Mid to Anterior Superior Temporal Cortex:
- Involved in auditory processing and integration of affective intonation contours.
- Integrates acoustic parameters such as intonation, pitch, and duration.
- Amygdala:
- Detects personal relevance in affective intonations; allows higher brain regions to focus resources effectively.
- Processes socially and emotionally significant information, with mixed results regarding its activity.
- Right Ventral Frontoparietal Cortex:

Producing Emotional Prosody

- Tonal Domain: Uses systematic pitch variation for meaning changes (e.g., Mandarin tones).
Lateralization in Perception
