Swedish Massage
is a scientific manipulation of the nude skin of the body that improves and balances, relieves pain, improves mood by promoting the production of dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, and stimulates nerves in a way that helps to manage pain and discomfort.
Basic Manipulation of Swedish Massage:
Effleurage
Petrissage
Friction
Tapotement
Vibration
Effleruage (Word Origin)
It comes from the French word “effleurer” which means to flow or glide
Effleruage (Meaning)
It is the application of unbroken gliding movement following the body’s contour which is applied in only one direction to avoid friction. It is done towards the heart.
One Handed Effleurage (1st Sub Variation)

Circular (One Handed Effleurage)
using palm in circular motion can be performed around shoulder, elbow, hip, or knee
Ironing
this is deep effleurage using the palm, forearm, or fist. The deeper the glide, the slower the move.

Circular (2nd one on the Two-Handed Effleurage)
side by side in circular motion
Alternate Hand (1st Sub Variation)

Alternate Hand (2nd Sub Variation)
(it can be performed as one hand circles a region and the other hand moves behind in a crescent shape, control does not rush) Circular is a Sub Variation of?
Raking
two fingertips apart on the erector spinae muscle with pressure and is done using 2 hands alternately
Circular (Alternate Hand Effleurage)
It can be performed as one hand circles a region and the other hand moves behind in a crescent shape, control does not rush
Nerve Stroke
a feather-light finger tracing over the skin, the direction is from superior to inferior or proximal to distal

Petrissage (Word Origin)
It comes from the French word “petrir” which means to mash or to knead.
Petrissage (Meaning)
It is a cycle of rhythmic, lifting, squeezing, and releasing tissue.

Two-Handed Petrissage (2nd Sub Variation)
Ocean Wave is a Sub Variation of?
Praying Hands
finger interlaced, palm squeezing upward
Ocean Wave
gliding hands in opposite directions with compression
Alternate Hand Petrissage
grasp and release alternately
Fulling
grasp the tissue with both hands and lift it up and away from the bone while spreading it out laterally
Skin Rolling
it involves lifting and rolling the skin, no downward movement is used
Friction (Word Origin)
Comes from the Latin word “friksyu” meaning to rub.
Friction (Meaning)
It is performed by compressing tissues in several directions, back and forth movement usually done dry or without oil.
Friction (1st Variation)
Superficial Warming is a Sub Variation of?

Friction (5th Variation)
(small circular movements that glide superficial tissues over underlying using fingers or palms usually applied around joints and thin bony areas.) Circular is a sub variation of?
Friction (6th Variation)
Chucking or Deep Parallel Friction is a Sub Variation of?
Superficial Warming
"“heat rub” palms move briskly in opposite directions.
Superficial Warming (1st Sub Variation)
Sawing is a Sub Variation of?
Sawing
the fingertips, knuckles, ulnar edge, and thumb may be used, the surface area treated is small (scapula area)
Scapula Area
Where is the small surface area treated by Sawing?
Cross Fiber or Deep Transverse Friction
This is a very penetrating form of friction, the direction of movement is perpendicular to the muscle fibers with moderate to heavy pressure.
Rolling
It is best suited for the extremeties; hold limb with open hands back and forth from distal to proximalWrin
Wringing
grasp firmly while twisting in opposite directions. It is also best suited for extremities. It is like wringing water out of the cloth.
Circular (Friction)
Small circular movements that glide superficial tissues over underlying using fingers or palms usually applied around joints and thin bony areas.
Chucking or Deep Parallel Friction
the movements are in the same direction as muscle, tendon, and ligamentous fibers. It is usually performed one-handed. Thumbs or fingers move back and forth while the other hand is supporting. It’s usually applied over bony areas.
Tapotement (Word Origin)
It comes from the French word tapoter
Tapotement (Meaning)
Another term for “percussion”, repetitive staccato striking movements of the hands simultaneously or alternately.

skin is lifted by grasping quickly at the point of striking
