Silicate Minerals
A group of minerals that include silicates, which are minerals whose structure includes silicon tetrahedrons.
Silicon Tetrahedron
The basic building block of all silicate minerals, consisting of a silicon atom bonded to four oxygen atoms.
Olivine
A nesosilicate mineral with the formula (Mg,Fe)2SiO4, commonly found in igneous rocks.
Garnet
A silicate mineral group represented by a general formula of A3B2(SiO4)3, important in metamorphic rocks.
Sorosilicates
A class of silicate minerals that share oxygen atoms with pairs of silicon tetrahedra.
Cyclosilicates
Silicate minerals composed of silicon tetrahedra connected in a ring, with a Si to O ratio of 1:3.
Inosilicates
Silicate minerals that form chains of silicon tetrahedra, consisting of single or double chains.
Phyllosilicates
Silicate minerals characterized by sheets of tetrahedra where three oxygens are shared.
Tectosilicates
Silicate minerals that have a framework structure where all oxygen atoms are shared.
Quartz
A common silicate mineral with the formula SiO2, occurring in various forms and colors.
Feldspar
A group of silicate minerals that are the most abundant in the Earth's crust, including plagioclase and potassium feldspar.
Mica
A group of phyllosilicate minerals characterized by the ability to form thin, flexible sheets.
Clay Minerals
A group of phyllosilicates that are primary components of soils and fine-grained sediments.
