Hypertension
33% of Americans, half have it under control. Increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage
Risk factors for hypertension
Family history, Diet too high in sodium, Sedentary lifestyle, Obesity, Too much alcohol consumption, Tobacco use
Diabetes
Results when the body does not control the amount of glucose in the blood. The body does not produce enoug hinsulin or use it properly.
Risk factors for diabetes
Age over 45, obesity, family history, diet, physical inactivity, race and ethnicity, history of gestational diabetes
Rheumatoid Arthritis
An inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffeness, and loss of function in the joints.
Features include: warm, swollen joints, symmetrical pattern of affected joints, fatigue, fever, and a loss of energy
Sleep
At least 7 hours of sleep. Most adults don’t get that.
Exercise & Nutrition
Adults should engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week and for more extensive health benefits adult should engage in at least 300 minutes of aerobic exercise per week. Many also suffer from nutritional deficits and should pay attention to the amount of sodium, sugar, and fat they ingest.
Sexuality and Middle Adulthood
They are staying active. 74% of 40-49 year old males and 70% of females report sexual intercourse within the last year. Among those 50-59, the numbers are 58% and 51%.
Brain Functioning
MIddle age adults cognitively perform well, even improving on their performance from early adulthood. They are calmer, less neurotic, and better at managing emotions than early adults.

Stagnation - Not feeling challenged or needed may result in feelings of stagnation, and thus middle aged adults should not withdraw from generativity activities
