Horticulture
The science and art of cultivating, processing and marketing fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants.
Hortus
Latin word meaning 'garden'.
Cultura
Latin word meaning 'cultivation'.
Pomology
The branch of horticulture dealing with fruits, including fruits, small fruits, vines, tree fruits, brambles, and nuts.
Olericulture
The branch of horticulture dealing with vegetables; plants grown for their fruits, leaves, roots or pods; includes herbs.
Ornamental horticulture
Branch of horticulture concerned with aesthetics and propagation of ornamental plants; includes the nursery industry, floriculture, and turfgrass production.
Nursery Industry
Grows living plants in fields, greenhouses, or shade houses for landscaping; includes trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines, annuals, and perennials.

Sector of ornamental horticulture focused on cut flowers, bedding plants, houseplants, potted plants, and seasonal/holiday demand.

Lawn grass maintenance for homes, commercial sites, athletic fields, golf courses; includes sod farms and turfgrass production.
Fruits

Small fruits
Subgroup of pomology including blueberry, strawberry, and melon.
Vines
Grapes, muscadines, and kiwi.
Tree fruits
Citrus, mango, papaya, persimmon, and fig.
Brambles
Blackberry and raspberry.
Nuts
Tree nuts such as pecan, walnut, cashew, almond, and pistachio.
Vegetables
Plants grown for their fruits, leaves, roots or pods.
Herbs
Roots, stems, leaves used for flavorings, foods, perfumes, and medicines.

Field in horticulture focused on designing outdoor spaces using plants.
Agronomy
Branch of agricultural science dealing with soils, crop production, and field management; related to horticulture.
Forestry
Science of managing forests for timber and other products; related to horticulture as an applied science.
