Colonialism

A particular type of imperialism in which people move into and settle on the land of another country.

Imperialism

Lingua Franca

A common language used by people who do not share the same native language.

Pidgin Language

A simplified mixture of two languages developed through extensive contact, often through trade.

Creole Language

A new combined language that develops from the mixing of two or more separate languages into a more formal structure.

The greater interconnection between places resulting from improvements in transportation affecting cultural distinctiveness.

Cultural Convergence

The idea that cultural traits are becoming more similar across cultures due to globalization.

Cultural Divergence

The idea that cultures may change over time, leading to divisions and changes due to isolation or other barriers.

Syncretism

The fusion or blending of two distinct cultural traits into a new hybrid trait.
