Definition of homeostasis
maintaining a stable internal environment in the body, keeps things like temperature, blood sugar, and water levels constant.
Stimulus
a change in the body
Set point
normal level (ex: 37°C body temp)
Deviation
when conditions move away from normal
Enzymes
Enzymes are proteins that control reactions, work best at optimum temperature (~37°C)
What happens when body is at high temp
denaturation (shape changes, stops working)
What happens when body is at low temp
reactions slow down
Negative Feedback
Brings the body back to the set point (normal)
Positive Feedback
Enhances the change until the process is complete.
What does the receptor do
detects change
What does the control center do
processes info (usually brain)
what does the effector do
carries out response
what does the hypothalamus (brain) do
controls temperature (acts like a thermostat)
what does the skin do
sweating and heat loss
what do the kidneys do
control water balance (osmoregulation)
what does the liver do
controls glucose levels
