Nutrient
A substance in food that the body needs for energy, growth, repair, and health.
Carbohydrates
A nutrient whose function is to provide the body with energy.
Protein
A nutrient necessary for growth and repair of the body.
Fat
A nutrient used for insulation and as a source of energy.
Vitamins
Nutrients that help keep the body healthy.
Balanced diet
A diet that contains the correct amounts of all nutrients needed to keep the body healthy.
Digestion
The process of breaking down food into smaller soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Fibre
A substance that helps food move through the digestive system and prevents constipation.
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma.
Seed dispersal
A process that reduces competition for light, water, and nutrients and helps plants grow in new places.
Wind dispersal
A method of seed dispersal where light seeds are carried by the wind.
Animal dispersal
A method of seed dispersal where animals carry seeds on their fur or in droppings.
Respiration
The process that releases energy from food in living cells for movement, growth, repair, and other life processes.
Aerobic respiration
A type of respiration that uses oxygen, releases a large amount of energy, and produces carbon dioxide and water as waste.
Anaerobic respiration
A type of respiration that happens without oxygen and releases less energy.
Lactic acid
A substance that builds up in muscles during vigorous exercise when oxygen is low, which can cause muscles to become tired or painful.
Red blood cells
Cells that transport oxygen from the lungs to body cells and help transport carbon dioxide back to the lungs.
Hemoglobin
The substance used by red blood cells to transport oxygen around the body.
Word equation for respiration
Glucose+Oxygen→Carbon dioxide+Water+Energy
