why do we do cracking?
to turn the lower demand, less useful, longer chain hydrocarbons into higher demand, more useful shorter chain hydrocarbons
what are the conditions for catalytic cracking?
heating the hydrocarbon, in order to vaporise them
a catalyst is used, usually powdered aluminium oxide
conditions for thermal (steam) cracking?
carried out at high temperatures
vaporised hydrocarbons are mixed with steam
what are the products of cracking?
mixture of shorter alkanes and alkenes
