TBI
Traumatic Brain Injury; an insult to the brain from an external force.
ABI
Acquired Brain Injury; occurs on a cellular level.
Comorbidity
An entry or health condition that occurs in addition to the primary injury.
Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)
A scale used to assess recovery progress in clients with brain injury, scoring from 3 to 15 based on eye, verbal, and motor responses.
Vegetative State
A condition marked by full abstinence of awareness and responsiveness.
Contra Coup
The secondary impact of the brain causing injury when it rebounds against the opposite side of the skull.
CTE
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy; a disease caused by repetitive forceful impacts to the head, leading to tau protein accumulation in the brain.
Hydrocephalus
Buildup of fluid in or around the brain.
Persistent Vegetative State
A condition lasting longer than a month where a patient has no symptoms of behavioral responses.
Open Head Injury
Injury that penetrates the skull, such as from a car accident or bullet.
Craniotomy
A surgical procedure where part of the skull is removed to alleviate pressure on the brain.
Rancho Los Amigos Scale
A scale that categorizes brain injury recovery levels from total assistance to appropriate responses.
Minimal Assist
A level of assistance where the patient can perform most tasks but needs some help, typically around 25%.
