English Word Classes
The 8 word classes in English: Verb, Noun, Adjective, Adverb, Determiner, Pronoun, Conjunction, and Preposition.
Open Classes
Word classes where new words can be added, including Verbs, Nouns, Adjectives, and Adverbs.
Verb
A word class that describes actions and states.
Ordinary Verb
A verb that has meaning on its own and can be the only verb in a phrase.
Auxiliary Verb
A verb with no meaning and only a grammatical function, always used in combination with an ordinary verb.
Modal Verb
A verb that adds meaning to the ordinary verb, such as "should," "might," or "can."
Noun
A word class that describes people, places, things, and ideas.
Adjective
A word class used to modify nouns.
Adverb
A word class used to modify verbs.
Closed Classes
Word classes limited to a fixed set of words, including Determiners, Pronouns, Prepositions, and Conjunctions.
Determiner
A word class that expresses a reference of a noun in context, encompassing articles, quantifiers, numerals, possessives, demonstratives, and interrogatives.
Articles
Determiners used to state whether the noun is definite or indefinite.
Quantifiers
Determiners that indicate the quantity of the noun without being exact.
Numerals
Determiners used to indicate the exact quantity or order of the noun.
Possessive Determiner
A determiner that indicates who or what the noun belongs to.
Demonstrative Determiner
A determiner used to draw attention to nouns.
Interrogative Determiner
A determiner used to introduce questions.
Pronoun
A word class that replaces a noun or noun phrase.
Personal Pronoun
A pronoun used to replace a noun, mostly to avoid repetition.
Possessive Pronoun
A pronoun that indicates possession without a noun following in the same phrase.
Demonstrative Pronoun
A pronoun used to draw attention to something without a noun following in the same phrase.
Interrogative Pronoun
A pronoun used to introduce questions without a name following in the same phrase.
Relative Pronoun
A pronoun that refers back to an earlier noun to link two sentences.
Reflexive Pronoun
A pronoun used instead of a personal pronoun when the subject performing the action and the object undergoing it are the same.
Indefinite Pronoun
A pronoun that refers to non-specific beings, objects, or places.
Preposition
A word class that expresses different types of relations, such as place or time.
Conjunction
A word class that links two words, phrases, or clauses.
Word Class Overlap
The ability of a word to belong to more than one class depending on context, such as "that" being a determiner, pronoun, or conjunction.
