Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA)
Anemia caused by an inadequate supply of iron, impaired iron absorption, or increased body's need for iron.
Thalassemia
Anemia associated with abnormalities of the beta chain of adult hemoglobin, with types such as Thalassemia Minor and Thalassemia Major.
Hemophilia
A group of bleeding disorders characterized by deficiency of one of the factors necessary for blood coagulation.
Leukemia
Cancer of the blood-forming tissues, characterized by distorted and uncontrolled proliferation of white blood cells (leukocytes).
Petechiae
Small red or purple spots on the body, caused by bleeding into the skin, often associated with blood disorders.
Splenectomy
Surgical removal of the spleen, often required when the spleen is markedly enlarged.
Bone marrow aspiration
A diagnostic procedure in which a needle is inserted into the bone to collect bone marrow for examination.
Oxygen therapy
Medical treatment that provides supplemental oxygen to patients, especially those with low blood oxygen levels.
Rh incompatibility
A condition that occurs during pregnancy if a mother has Rh-negative blood and the baby has Rh-positive blood.
Pica
An eating disorder characterized by the craving and consumption of non-food substances, often seen in patients with anemia.
CBC
Complete Blood Count - a common blood test used to evaluate overall health and detect a variety of disorders.
Blood transfusion
The process of transferring blood or blood products into a person's circulation for medical purposes.
Anemia
A condition in which the blood doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells, leading to insufficient oxygen flow.
Phototherapy
Treatment that involves exposure to light, often used for conditions like jaundice in newborns.
Autologous transplant
A type of bone marrow transplant in which a patient receives their own stem cells.
Exchange transfusion
A medical procedure that replaces a patient's blood with donor blood, commonly used in newborns with hemolytic disease.
Thrombocytopenia
A condition characterized by abnormally low levels of platelets in the blood, increasing the risk of bleeding.
Elevated hematocrit
A condition where the proportion of blood volume that is occupied by red blood cells is higher than normal, often seen in dehydration or some diseases.
