What are some restrictions when planning a cross country flight that will end in/traverse a Class B airspace?
FAR 61.95
Needs an endorsement (90 days) to fly through a B
Requires ATC clearance into the airspace
Requires flight following for VFR traffic
What is the purpose of a MOA and what considerations need to be taken into account when flying through a MOA on a cross country?
used to seperate certain military training activities
No clearance required
must exercise extreme caution
What is flight following?
Provides traffic separation
ATC clearances through controlled airspace, if required
Help navigate adverse weather conditions
What are some ways to navigate on a cross country flight?
Pilotage
Dead Reckoning
VOR
GPS navigationWh
What is VOR and how does VOR navigation work?
Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Range
Provides azimuth information in magnetic headings
DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) provides distance
You adjust the OBS (Omni Bearing Selector) on the CDI (Course Deviation Indicator) to the desired radial
What is Pilotage?
travel via landmarks
What is dead reckoning?
travel via time, airspeed, distance and direction
What factors should you consider when selecting a cruising altitude for a VFR cross-country?
Terrain and obstacles
Glide distance
VFR cruising altitude
Winds aloft
Icing conditions
Airspace
Cloud bases, layers, ceilings
Temperature
How does one determine the correct VFR cruising altitude?
0 - 179, odd thousand + 500
180 - 359, even thousand + 500
starting at 3,000 MSL
What is the glide distance of your airplane?
Look this up
What is a winds aloft chart and how is decoded?
Provides wind direction, Wind Speed and Temperature (C)
9900 light and variable
Winds greater than 360, subtract 5 to the first digit and add 100 to wind
For winds over 200 knots, it will be denoted by 99. Ie 7599 (250* at 199 kts)
How can one determine pressure altitude?
Pressure altitude = 1,000 * (29.92 - current altimeter) + elevation
What information is required to be given when submitting a VFR flight plan?
aircraft ident number and call sign
aircraft type
full name and address of PIC
The point and proposed time of departure
Route, Cruising Altitude, True Airspeed at cruise
Landing point and estimed elapsed time
Fuel on board (in hours)
Number of souls on board
What are the procedures for activating and closing a VFR flight plan?
Filed with the nearest FSS
Over radio or phone
1800 WX Brief
Flight plans are held for one hour after proposed departure time
Activate: with FSS. App/Dep Control Frequency for Flight following
Closing: PIC’s respoonsibilty to close with FSS, 1800 Wx Brief or ATC facility
30 min after filed ETA, search & rescue will start
How can you identify risks as a pilot?
PAVE
Pilot
Aircraft
enVironment
External Pressures
Limitations of ATC services
Improper fuel planning
What are some ‘Pilot’ elements of PAVE checklist?
IMSAFE Checklist
Pilot Currency
Currency vs Proficiency
What are some ‘Aircraft’ elements of the PAVE checklist?
Inspections - AV1ATE
Required equipment - ATOMATOFLAMES FLAPS
MEL/ KOEL
Inop equipment under FAR 91.213
What are some ‘Environment’ elements of the PAVE checklist?
Weather - NOTAMS, METAR, TAF
Terrain
Airspace
What are some ‘External Pressures’ elements of the PAVE checklist?
Stressors
Get-there-itis
