Thematic Map
Provides information about one particular topic focus, such as average temperature in the US.
Topographic Map
Gives very detailed information about both natural and man-made features in a specific area.
General Purpose Map
Provides a wide range of information on one map, such as a map of Canada.
Large Scale (LS) Map
Shows a lot of detail but covers less area.
Small Scale (SS) Map
Shows less detail but covers more area.
Military 6-digit Grid
A map grid system read by going right then up.
Alpha-numeric Grid
A map grid system that uses numbers and letters.
Latitude
Parallel lines used to measure position on a map.
Longitude
Meridians used to measure position on a map.
Equator
The line of latitude located at 0∘.
Arictic Circle
The line of latitude located at 23.5∘N according to the lecture notes.
Anarictic Circle
The line of latitude located at 23.5∘S according to the lecture notes.
Tropic of Cancer
The line of latitude located at 66.5∘N according to the lecture notes.
Tropic of Capricorn
The line of latitude located at 66.5∘S according to the lecture notes.
North Pole
The point located at 90∘N.
South Pole
The point located at 90∘S.
Prime Meridian
The line of longitude located at 0∘.
International Date Line
The line of longitude located at 180∘.
Map Requirements
Standard elements including Title, Scale, Border, Colour, Neatness, Key/Legend, Direction Symbol, and Labels.
Newfoundland & Labourdor Time
A Canadian time zone noted for being +30 mins relative to Atlantic Time.
Representative Fraction (RF)
A scale shown as a ratio, such as 1:700,000cm.
Direct Statement Scale
A scale expressed in words, such as 1cm=75km.
RF Scale Conversion Rule
To convert from an RF scale to a direct statement, move the decimal place 5 times to the left (e.g., 1:50,000cm→1:0.5km).
GPS (Global Positioning System)
A satellite navigation system used to pinpoint any longitude or latitude on the Earth's surface.
GIS (Geographic Information System)
A combination mapping and database program used to create dynamic layered maps stored on a computer.
Remote Sensing
Gathering information about a landscape from a distance, such as satellite imagery.
Lidar
A type of remote sensing that uses flashes of laser light directed at Earth.
Geostationary Orbit
A satellite that moves in a direction and speed so that it stays over the same spot on Earth.
North-South Orbit
A satellite that moves North-South while Earth rotates under it, eventually seeing the whole Earth.
