Luting
The process of cementing two components together through adhesion.
Pulpal Protection
Protection of the dental pulp from thermal shock and galvanic shock.
Cement Solubility
Refers to the extent to which a cement can dissolve when exposed to water.
Temporary Restoration
A temporary filling meant to last about six to eight weeks.
Sedative Filling
A filling that calms an irritated tooth.
Glass Ionomer
A type of cement used for permanent restorations that releases fluoride.
ZOE
Zinc Oxide Eugenol; a sedative filling material that has a characteristic smell of cloves.
Polycarboxylate Cement
A cement that combines zinc oxide with carboxylic acid; kinder to the pulp than zinc phosphate.
Microleakage
Leakage that occurs between the restoration and the tooth, potentially allowing bacteria to enter.
Direct Pulp Cap
A treatment placed directly over a pulp exposure.
Indirect Pulp Cap
A treatment placed over a nearly exposed pulp but without direct contact.
Calcium Hydroxide
A liner that stimulates the formation of reparative dentin.
Etching
The process of preparing the tooth surface to enhance bonding by removing the smear layer.
Dentin Bonding
The application of bonding agents on prepared dentin to create retention for restorative materials.
Varnish
A sealant applied to dental tubules to prevent sensitivity and thermal shock.
Self Cure Cement
Cement that hardens on its own without the need for light curing.
Dual Cure Cement
Cement that can both self-cure and be further hardened with light curing.
Surgical Dressing
A material used to protect gums after periodontal surgery.
Provisional Cement
Temporary cement used to secure a restoration temporarily.
