Etiology
The study of the cause or origin of a disease.
Hiatal Hernia
A condition where part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity.
GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, a chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus.
Dyspepsia
Indigestion or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs)
Medications that reduce stomach acid production by inhibiting the proton pump.
Nissen Fundoplication
A surgical procedure to treat GERD by wrapping the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus.
Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)
A condition characterized by sores or ulcers forming in the stomach lining, small intestine, or esophagus.
Cholinergic Drugs
Medications that promote the activity of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, often used to increase gastrointestinal motility.
Anticholinergics
Medications that block the action of acetylcholine on the muscarinic receptors of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Esophagitis
Inflammation of the esophagus, often caused by acid reflux.
