Pro Roscio Amerino -- Chapters 19 and 20

and though he had been slain after the first hour of the night, this messenger arrives at Ameria by the first [glimmer of] daylight,

decem hors nocturnis pervolavit quinquaginta et sex milia passuum cisiis, non modo ut primus adferret inimico exoptatum nuntium,

in ten hours of the night he travelled fifty-six miles in a carriage, not only to [be] the first to bring his enemy the wished-for news,

sed etiam ostenderet curorem inimici, quam recentissimum, que telum extractum e corpore paulo ante.

but also to show [him] the blood of his enemy, as fresh as possible, and the weapon [only] extracted from his body a little before.

quo quadriduo haec gesta sunt, res defertur ad Chrysogonum in castra L. Sullae Volaterras;

Within four days of these [events] taking place, news [of the deed] is brought to Chrysogonus in the camp of Lucius Sulla at Volaterra;

magnitudo pecuniae demonstratur; bonitas praediorum — nam reliquit decem et tris fundos,

the magnitude of his fortune is pointed out [to him]; the excellence of his estates — for he left behind thirteen properties,

fere omnes qui tangunt Tiberim — inopia et solitudo huius commemoratur; demonstrant cum, pater huiusce, Sex. Roscius, homo tam splendidus et gratiosus,

nearly all of which border the Tiber — the destitution and isolation of his [son] is mentioned; they point out that, [as] the father of this man, Sextus Roscius, a man so distinguished and influential,

sit occisus nullo negotio. hunc hominem, incautam et rusticum et ignotum Romae, posse perfacile tolli de medio;

had been killed with no difficulty. This man, unsuspecting and rustic and unknown at Rome, might easily be taken out of the way;

pollicentur suam operam ad eam rem.

they promise their own help for that business.
