Displacment
displases unacceptable impulses towards a more acceptable person or object
ex. Mad at boss, goes home and yells at younger sister
Sublimation
Unacceptable urges are channeled into more acceptable activities
unacceptable s aggressive urges and channeling it into play football
Oral Stage
Birth - 1 year
mouth is associated with pleasure (sucking, biting, chewing)
fixated will lead to thumb sucking or nail biting
Anal stage
1-3 years old
gratification comes from bowel and bladder function
fixation will lead to anal retentive or anal explosive behaviors
Phallic Stage
3-5 years old
focus of pleasure of gentials
children are sexual attracted to their opposite sex parents
children try to mimic same sex parents
fixation will lead toe xcessive masculinity in males and the need for attention in females
Oedipus Complex
young boy has sexual feelings for mother
boy feels hostile and jealous towards feather but they realize their father is more powerful
Castration Anxiety
boys afraid their father will punish them for castrating them
Electra Complex
Girls have incestuous feelings towards father and have to compete with mother
girls will suffer from deprivation and loss cause they don’t have what guys have so they will blame mom for not sending her into the world sufficently

5-puberty
sexuality is pressed due to intense anxiety caused by Oedipus/Electra complex
children focus on hobbies, school and friendships

Puberty on
sexual feelings re-emerge but are redirected toward others who resemble the person’s opposite sex parent
