Notochord
A flexible rod-shaped structure that provides support and is found in the embryonic stage of vertebrates.
Somites
Blocks of mesoderm that give rise to vertebrae, muscle, and dermis.
Splanchnocranium
The part of the skull that arises from the embryonic pharyngeal arches.
Dermatocranium
The bony part of the skull that develops intramembranously, comprising the flat bones of the skull.
Chondrocranium
The cartilaginous structure that forms the base of the skull, derived from the neural crest and mesoderm.
Otic Placode
A thickening of ectoderm that gives rise to structures of the inner ear.
Optic Placode
A thickening of ectoderm that develops into the lens of the eye.
Nasal Placode
A thickening of ectoderm that forms the sensory structures of the nose.
Cranial Nerve I
Olfactory nerve; responsible for the sense of smell, derived from the nasal placode.
Cranial Nerve II
Optic nerve; responsible for vision, derived from the optic placode.
Cranial Nerve VIII
Vestibulocochlear nerve; responsible for hearing and balance, derived from the otic placode.
Embryonic Head Development
The process by which the embryonic head structures and sensory organs develop, including the formation of cranial nerves.
Gill Slits
Structures present during the embryonic stage that develop into various structures in the head and neck.
Mandibular Arch
The first pharyngeal arch that develops into structures of the jaw.
Hyoid Arch
The second pharyngeal arch that contributes to the hyoid bone and associated structures.
Pharyngeal Arches
Embryonic structures that give rise to various neck and throat structures in vertebrates.
Neural Crest Cells
Cells that arise from the embryonic ectoderm, contributing to a variety of structures including elements of the head.
