Angioplasty
A medical procedure that involves the use of a balloon to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels.
PCI
Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, a non-surgical procedure to treat narrowing of the coronary arteries.
Plain Old Balloon Angioplasty (POBA)
The original form of angioplasty, utilizing a balloon catheter to enlarge narrowed arteries.
Restenosis
The re-narrowing of an artery after treatment such as angioplasty.
Contraindications
Situations or conditions where a procedure, such as PCI, should not be performed.
Dual Antiplatelet Therapy (DAPT)
Combination of two medications (e.g., ASA and Clopidogrel) to prevent blood clots.
NSTEMI
Non-ST elevation myocardial infarction, a type of heart attack characterized by certain irregularities on an ECG.
STEMI
ST elevation myocardial infarction, a more severe type of heart attack indicated by ST segment elevation on an ECG.
Fibrinolysis
A medical treatment to dissolve blood clots using clot-busting medications.
Door to Balloon Time (D2B)
The targeted time frame to balloon inflation after a patient arrives at the hospital.
Balloon Catheter
A thin tube with a balloon on the end used in angioplasty to open up blocked blood vessels.
Stents
Small mesh tubes inserted into narrowed arteries to keep them open.
Drug Eluting Stents (DES)
Stents coated with medication that helps prevent restenosis.
Bare Metal Stents
Uncoated stents made of metal, used primarily in larger vessels.
Biodegradable Stents
Stents made from material that dissolves over time, leaving no permanent device in the artery.
Bioabsorbable Stents
Stents designed to fully absorb into the body over a period, preventing long-term foreign body presence.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
A non-invasive imaging technology that produces three dimensional detailed anatomical images.
Vessel Restenosis
The re-narrowing of a blood vessel after treatment due to healing processes.
Complications During PCI
Potential risks associated with the PCI procedure such as vessel closure or perforation.
Primary PCI
Immediate catheter-based treatment for a patient experiencing a myocardial infarction.
Rescue PCI
A procedure performed after failed thrombolysis in heart attack patients.
PCI Hospital
A medical facility equipped to perform Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.
Angina
Chest pain resulting from reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.
Coronary Artery Disease
A condition characterized by narrowed or blocked coronary arteries due to plaque buildup.
Emergency Transfer
Rapid movement of a patient to a specialized facility for urgent medical care.
Assessment of MI
Evaluating a patient to determine if they are having a myocardial infarction.
Patient Experience
The overall perceptions and feelings of a patient throughout their medical care journey.
Healthcare Guidelines
Recommendations developed by health organizations to standardize and improve patient care.
Coronary Angiography
An imaging technique used to visualize the blood vessels of the heart.
Cobalt Chromium
A material used in the construction of advanced stents.
Sirolimus
A drug used in the coating of some stents to prevent tissue proliferation.
Paclitaxel
A medication used in drug eluting stents to reduce scar tissue formation.
Thrombosis
A condition where a blood clot forms in a blood vessel.
Emergency Bypass Surgery
A surgical procedure to restore blood flow by bypassing blocked arteries.
Patient Triage
The process of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their condition.
Vascular Status
A term referring to the health and integrity of blood vessels.
Lesion Characteristics
The specific features of blockages in blood vessels, including size and type.
Proliferative Response
The body's healing response that can lead to restenosis.
Ticagrelor
An antiplatelet medication used in DAPT following PCI.
Primary Sites in Ontario
Institutions designated for the timely performance of PCI across the province.
Pediatric Considerations
Unique factors to consider when performing procedures on younger patients.
