Best available Research with clinical expertise and patient values, all to guide treatment decisions
What is quantitive research?
Involves collecting and analyzing numerical data to test hypotheses and establish cause-and-effect relationships.
Commonly used for experimental designs, surveys, assessments
Developing or distributing measures
What is qualitative research?
Explores subjective experiences, meaning, and perspective though non-mericel data
Aims to gain a deep understanding of individuals lived experiences and the context of their art therapy journey
(Interviews, focus groups, observations, artwork analysis)
What is mixed methods research?

Phenomenology
Focus on exploring and describing the essence of individuals lived experiences and perceptions related to art therapy
Arts-based research (ABR)
Incorporates artistic processes and products as a primary mode of inquiry and dissemination in art therapy research
Literature review
Critical analysis and integrating existing published research on a specific topic. Research studies involve identifying, evaluating and summarizing relevant studies in order to understand the current state of knowledge and explore gaps.
Research design: Experimental Design
Used to establish cause-and-effect relationships by manipulative independent variables and measuring outcomes.
(Randomized controlled trials)
Research designs: Quasi Experimental Designs
Lacks random assignment but still aim to examine casual relationship in real-world setting
Research design: descriptive designs
The aim to describe characteristics, experiences, or phenomena related to art therapy without manipulating variables
(Surveys, case studies)
Research design: sampling methods
Determines how participants are selected for the study
(Random sampling, purposive sampling, and convenience sampling)
What are research questions
Clear, focused, and specific questions that guide a research project in helping to define its scope and direction
What is methodology?
Rules and ideas that are important in science, art, or discipline.
A particular procedure or set of procedures
How to prepare for publication
Formulate a clear and focused research question.
Thorough literature review- gaps in knowledge, develop research
Select appropriate research design- depends on nature, available resources, ethical considerations
Validity and reliability of measurement tools. Data collection methods to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Pilot testing refines research design, data collection, and procedures before main study
What must art therapist provide to research participates?
Provide information
How to participate in research?
Informed Consent- use and/or release participated information
Develop plan to protect confidentiality of participates.
Interview style that are culturally competent and appropriate, such as open-ended questions, conduct empathetic assessments, discovering the clients beliefs, reflective listening
