Elias van Rooyen
A lazy woodcutter living in the forest who prefers making 'good plans' and luck over hard work, and dreams of buying a gun to hunt elephants for ivory.
Barta van Rooyen
The wife of Elias who becomes distraught and ages significantly after her three-year-old son disappears.
Lukas van Rooyen
The child who went missing in the Knysna forest at age 3 after playing with stones inside the house.
Grootvoete
The term used by forest dwellers for elephants, which are considered a danger but also a source of ivory.
Tant Malie
A woman described as a 'prophet of doom' who increases tension by telling stories of other children who died or disappeared in the forest, such as the child behind Karatara and Flip Lourens.
Fiela Komoetie
A strong, religious, and hardworking woman who owns the farm Wolwekraal in the Lange Kloof and raised Benjamin as her 'hanskind.'
Selling Komoetie
Fiela's husband who is physically weak and can no longer perform hard labor, but makes whips, shoes, and prepares skins.
Benjamin Komoetie
A white child who was found at Fiela's back door 9 years ago and is raised as part of the Komoetie family.
Wolwekraal
The 12morge piece of land in the Lange Kloof that Fiela inherited from her father.
Die Lange and Die Dikke
The nicknames for the two census takers, one tall with glasses and one fat with a red face, who discover Benjamin and initiate the conflict.
Lange Kloof
The dry, warm region characterized by Renosterbos and aloes, separated from the wet forest by a mountain.
