This is a severe disturbance in eating behavior that are a result in distortions in body image or how a patient perceives themselves.
What is the eating disorder that is characterized by eating too little?
Anorexia
What is the eating disorder that is characterized by purging?
Bulimia
How does a patient develop an eating disorder?
It is often a result of society or cultural influence. There is a genetic component as well. Patients can also have disruptions in the hypothalamus or issues with NE or Serotonin.
What type of countries have an increased number of people with eating disorders?
Industrialized countries
We know that anorexia is a dangerous problem with patients. What is something that makes this condition life threatening?
When a patient refuses to acknowledge that they even have a problem.
What are some key factors in anorexia nervosa?
Distorted body image even if they are underweight
They may have a reduced intake of food and an excess of exercise
Possible use of laxatives, diuretics, vomiting
What is the difference between bulimia and anorexia?
Bulimia is the binging of food and then purging. Anorexia is starving self from food.
What age group does anorexia affect?
Ages 12 to young adulthood
What are some physical s/s of anorexia?
Amenorrhea
Hypotension
Bradycardia
Metabolic or electrolyte changes
Are patients diagnosed with Bulimia typically underweight or overweight?
Neither; They are typically at a normal body weight
What are some s/s of bulimia?
Erosion of enamel (dental issues)
Gastric issues (possibly esophagitis)
Electrolyte imbalance
They are usually normal wt. or overweight
What are ways as a nurse that we can help patients experiencing eating disorders?
-Be an open listener to the client's feelings towards their self or obesity
-Readiness to address obesity
-Nutritional education, plan meals
-Adapt coping mechanism
-Work on their support system
