  • The primary motor cortex, or M1, is one of the principal brain areas involved in motor function. 

    • M1 is located in the frontal lobe of the brain.

  • The primary motor cortex is defined anatomically as the region of cortex that contains large neurons known as Betz cells.

  • Betz cells send long axons down the spinal cord to synapse directly onto the alpha motor neurons in the spinal cord, which connect to the muscles.

  • Somatotopic contralateral representation is, although far more integrated.
