Compliance
A superficial type of conformity where individuals go along with a belief publicly without changing their private views.
Identification
A moderate type of conformity where individuals change their behavior to be part of a group they value, even if they don’t fully agree.
Internalisation
The deepest type of conformity involving a genuine and usually permanent change of private views to match a group.
Normative Social Influence
Conformity to gain approval from a group, often producing compliance and driven by fear of rejection.
Informational Social Influence
Conformity to be right, especially when the correct answer is unclear, leading to internalisation.
Lucas et al Study
Research showing greater conformity to incorrect answers among students when the difficulty of maths questions was unclear.
Asch's Experiment
Study demonstrating that many participants conformed to at least one wrong answer due to self-consciousness and fear of rejection.
