Accreditation
A voluntary peer-review process through which an agency grants recognition to an institution for a program of study that meets specified criteria.
Certification
A voluntary process through which an agency grants recognition to an individual on demonstration, usually by examination, of specialized professional skills.
Essentials & Guidelines
A document specifying the minimum quality standards for the accreditation of an educational program as approved by the appropriate joint review committee.
Joint Review Committee (JRC)
A group of persons appointed by sponsoring organizations to oversee the accreditation process.
Licensure
The process by which a governmental agency, usually a state, grants permission to individuals to practice their profession.
Registry
A list of individuals holding certification in a particular profession.
Sponsoring Organization
A professional organization that appoints members to a joint review committee board or educational institution of higher learning.
Standards
A document specifying the minimum requirements for accreditation of an educational program by a joint review committee.
JRCERT
Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology; founded in 1969, it provides programmatic accreditation for approximately 750 programs.
Self-study
The document provided by a program containing evidence demonstrating that it meets or exceeds the Standards for accreditation.
Site Visit
A process of peer-review where a team visits a program to review documents and conduct interviews as part of the accreditation process.
ARRT
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists; an agency that certifies individuals and maintains a registry of those who pass the national examination.
CDPH-RHB
California Department of Public Health-Radiologic Health Branch; the state agency responsible for licensing individuals to practice in the state of California.
ASRT
American Society of Radiologic Technologists; founded in 1920, its main goal is to advance the professions of radiologic technology and imaging specialties.
AEIRS
Association of Educators in Imaging & Radiologic Sciences; founded in 1967 to encourage exchange of teaching concepts and establish minimum standards for teaching.
AHRA
American Healthcare Radiology Administrators; promotes management practice in administrative services and offers the Certified Administrator Exam.
ISRRT
International Society of Radiographers & Radiologic Technologists.
ACR
American College of Radiology; the main organization for radiologists and medical radiation physicists.
AMA
American Medical Association; founded in 1847, it is the largest and most active medical organization in the world.
RSNA
Radiological Society of North America; founded in 1915, it holds the largest radiology conference in the world.
