External Ear
Part of the ear that includes the auricle (pinna) and auditory canal, responsible for protection and sound capturing.
Middle Ear
Contains malleus, incus, and stapes; involved in the production and transmission of sound.
Inner Ear
Houses the cochlea, vestibule, and semicircular canals; responsible for hearing and equilibrium.
Cerumen
Ear wax produced by modified sweat glands in the external ear, helps lubricate the canal and trap bacteria.
Eustachian Tube
Tube connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx, aids in equalization of pressure.
Otic Medications
Medications used in the ear, including anti-infective and anti-inflammatory preparations.
Tympanic Membrane
Membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear.
Otitis Externa
Inflammation/infection of the external auditory canal, often called swimmer’s ear.
Otitis Media
Middle ear infection, commonly treated with antihistamines, decongestants, and antibiotics.
Ciprofloxacin
A quinolone antibiotic often included in newer otic antibiotic formulations.
Cerumenolytic
A type of medication used to soften ear wax for easier removal.
Meniere’s Disease
Condition of the inner ear characterized by vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss.
Otic Drop Administration
Technique for administering ear drops, including positioning instructions for adults and children.
Cortisporin
Older otic antibiotic containing Polymixin B, Neomycin, and Hydrocortisone.
