Ghana - nationalist leader, western educated, led strikes & boycotts against British, imprisoned & became national hero, 1960 - becomes prime minister, then president for life, dictator in 1964, raised taxes, decreased popularity, rejected local problems, overthrown in 1966 when he was in China
Jomo Kenyatta
Nationalist leader, fought for Kenyan independence, elected president in 1963, tried to unite various ethnic groups, amended constitution to increase his power (decreased popularity)
Mau Mau
Name given to local Kikiyu people by white settlers, resisted white control in Kenya, Mau Mau Uprising - 1950-1960, conflict between white settlers & Mau Mau, thousands dead & captured, Kenyatta imprisoned because he was believed to be leading the revolution.
