Vocabulary (definition)

Phonological Awareness
the general understanding of the sound structure of words, including rhymes, syllables, and phonemes
Phonemic Awareness
the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words
Phoneme
the smallest unit of sound within a spoken word
Phonics
a method of instruction that teaches the systematic relationship between letters and letter combinations in written language and individual sounds
Word Study
a method of instruction that teaches about words by integrating phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction, instead of strict memorization
Fluency
reading accurately, quickly, and with expression (prosody)
Comprehension
the ability to understand or get the meaning from text
