Testis
produce spermatozoa and synthesize testosterone
Epididymis
long coiled tube at the back of each testicle, where sperm mature, are stored, and then transported when needed
Ductus Deferens
a muscular tube that moves sperm from epididymis to be expelled from body
Ampulla
widened end of ductus deferens that serves as a holding and transportation area for sperm to prepare them from mixing with seminal fluids and ejaculation
Vesicular Gland (seminal vesicles)
paired glands behind bladder that produce a nutrient rich fluid that protects, nourishes, and helps transport sperm
prostate gland
produces a fluid that activates sperm, and helps semen liquify so sperm can swim
Bulbourethral Gland
produces a clear, lubricating, mucus-rich secretion
Urthera
dual-purpose passage for both excretion of urine and transportation of sperm
Retractor Penis Muscle
pulls nonerect, fibroelastic penis back, and helps maintain sigmoid flexure
Penis
primary repro organ ; used for copulation and to pass semen and urine
What are the differences between a bull and boars repro anatomy?
position of testis would change
no ampulla
vesicular glands are bigger
What are the differences between a boar and stallions repro anatomy?
position of testis moves
stallion has ampulla
spermatic cord = more narrow on boar
What are the differences between a stallion and a dogs repro anatomy?
position of testis moves again
in dogs they only have the prostate gland accessory
have an OS penis
prostate is larger
dog has bulbospongiosus
What is the purpose of a vasectomy?
The purpose of a vasectomy is to cut or seal ductus deferens to stop sperm from traveling to the rest of the reproductive system
How/why might a vasectomy be used in livestock, such as rams?
Used in “teaser” rams to stimulate ewes, and helps with safety and control of animal to avoid unplanned pregnancies. Helps with teasing because ram is sexually active, but infertile.
What are the benefits of castration?
reduced aggression
improved meat quality
What are the considerations with the age of pigs or timing of castration in their species?
Castrated at 5-7 days for easier physical recovery, minimizing stress, and easier procedure, and after too long they get boar taint
Mediastinum (rete testis)
middle white part of the testis
Testicular parenchyma
the lobe part of the testis
What are the 4 main types of placentation in mammals?
diffuse
zonary
discoid
cotyledonary
An example of a domestic species that utilizes each type of placenta
pig → diffuse
ruminants → cotyledonary
dogs & cats → zonary
rodents → discoid
What is the name of the fetal-maternal unit of the placenta in cattle?
Placentome
What is the name of the maternal component?
Maternal Cotyledon
What is the name of the fetal component?
Fetal Cotyledon
