Second Great Awakening

Gustavus Vassa (Olaudah Equiano)

A prominent African involved in the British movement to abolish the transatlantic slave trade. He was a former slave who purchased his own freedom, became an author, and traveled extensively to advocate for the abolition of slavery.

Gabriel Prosser

in 1800, he gathered 1000 rebellious slaves outside of Richmond; but 2 Africans gave the plot away, and the Virginia militia stymied the uprising before it could begin, along with 35 others he was executed.

Dred Scott Decision

A Missouri slave sued for his freedom, claiming that his four year stay in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory made free land by the Missouri Compromise had made him a free man. The U.S, Supreme Court decided he couldn't sue in federal court because he was property, not a citizen.

John Brown

Abolitionist who led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry in 1859, hoping to start a slave rebellion. Brown was captured, tried for treason, and executed, becoming a martyr for the abolitionist cause.
