Immunity
Resistance to infection, invasion by virus, bacteria, fungi, protozoan
Innate Nonspecific Immune System
First and second line of defense
Inflammation
Response to tissue damage which causes redness (RBC), swelling, and warmth at the site due to increase in cells and fluids
Lymphocytes
White blood cells made in the bone marrow
B cells
Mature in bone marrow and produce antibodies
Antigen binding site
Specific binding site to attach to the invader
Antibody Mediated Immunity
Made by plasma cells to bind to antigens causing clumping and then macrophages destroy the antigens
Primary immune response
Antigen exposure causes rapid division of plasma cells into Antibodies- takes 7-14 days for maximum amt. of Antibodies to be made. Many of the stimulated B cells become memory cells.
Secondary immune response
After re-exposure to SAME Antigen, memory cells make Antibodies in 2-6 days.
T cells
Mature in the thymus & divide into Killer T cells, Helper T cells and Suppressor T cells.
Pathogen
Disease-causing microbe
Inborn immunity
Resistance to nonhuman diseases before birth.
Acquired immunity
Resistance developed after birth.
Passive immunity
Antibody put in AND NOT in response to Antigen- temporary.
Active immunity
Antibody made by the body in response to Antigen- more permanent immunity.
Allergic reactions
Caused by hypersensitivity (hyperactive immune response).
Autoimmunity
Ab or T cells bind to “self” cells due to gene susceptibility & environment
Respiratory System
Takes in oxygen from the air and expels carbon dioxide as waste
Circulatory System
Carries oxygen, nutrients, and waste throughout the body
Right atrium
Collects deoxygenated blood from the body
Right ventricle
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Left atrium
Collects oxygenated blood from the lungs
Left ventricle
Pumps oxygenated blood to the body
