Bartering
Exchanging of goods or services without the use of money (basically just trading).
Private Enterprise
Business/industry that’s managed by independent companies or private individuals rather then the state.
Anglo-Japanese Alliance
An alliance between Britain and Japan, 1902-1922. Meant to prevent Russia from expanding in Manchuria while also preserving the territorial integrity of China and Korea.
Russo-Japanese War
1904-1905, over rival imperial ambitions (influence) in Manchuria and the Korean Empire. Fought on the Liaodong peninsula, Mekaden, the Yellow Sea, and the Sea of Japan.
Dogger Bank Incident
Russians mistake a British fishing vessel for a battleship, they attack it. The Brits, in response, closed the Suez Canal.
Western Powers
A term used to refer to the European countries with the most powerful economies, armies, and navies. Also, the US.
Ultimatum
A final demand or statement of terms, the rejection of which will result in retaliation or a breakdown of relations.
Isolationism
A policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interest of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries.
Louisiana Purchase
The purchase of Louisiana by the US from the French. The French sold this land because they needed money for a war.
Annexation
An international law where forcible acquisition and assertion of legal title over one state’s territory by another state, usually following military occupation of the territory, is illegal.
Manifest Destiny
An ideology of belief that the westward expansion of the US was justified and inevitable.
Monroe Doctrine
US will not permit any Euro nation to extend its holdings or use armed force on the two American continents and vice versa. A way to maintain the US’s isolationist policies.
Stock Market
A market where people own shares/%s of a business or company. They can also sell these shares.
Protectionism
The theory or practice of shielding a country’s domestic industries from foreign competition by taxing imports.
Spanish-American War
A conflict between the US and Spain that effectively ended Spain’s role as a colonial power in the New World. The US came out victorious and as a world power, and with territorial claims stretching from the Caribbean to SE Asia.
T. Roosevelt
The 26th president of the US in term from 1901-1909. He was a republican. He also vigorously led Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy.
Treaty of- Paris
a treaty signed by the Americans and Brits that formally recognized the US as an independent nation and ended the American Revolution.
Platt Amendment
A amendment. Passed as part of the 1901 Amery Appropriations Bill. Called for 7 demands to withdraw troops from Cuba.
Spooner Act of 1902
Authorized purchasing the assets of a French syndicate called the Compagnie Noucelle du Canal de Panama, provided that a treaty could be negotiated with the Republic of Columbia.
Triple Alliance
A defensive military alliance between Germany, Austria Hungary, and Italy. The three powers agreed to support each other if attacked by either France or Russia.
Triple Entente
An entente between Great Britain, France, and Russia. The leaders of the Allied Powers in WWI. Created for the purpose of mutual protection against the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
W. Wilson
the 28th president from 19-13-1921. He was apart of the democratic party. He was the leading architect of the League of Nations, and his progressive stance on foreign policy came to be known as Wilsonianism.
Pacifist
A person who opposes war or violence as a means of settling a dispute.
Zimmerman Telegram
A secret diplomatic communication issued from the Germans that proposed a military alliance between the Germans and Mexicans ONLY if the US joined the war (during WWI) against Germany. With Germany’s aid Mexico would recover Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico.
Lusitania
One of the largest ships of the time that was sunken by a German submarine.
Meiji Restoration
‘The Honorable Restoration’ was a political event that restored practical imperial rule to Japan in 1868 under Emperor Meiji.
