Consciousness
All that you are aware of at any instant, including sensory processing and thoughts.
Waking Consciousness
A state characterized by alertness, organized thought, and awareness of the sensory environment.
Altered State of Consciousness
A state in which perceptions, thoughts, and self-control differ from waking consciousness.
Sleep
The primary alteration in consciousness experienced daily, where awareness is significantly reduced.
Psychoactive Drugs
Substances that alter consciousness by affecting brain function and sensory perception.
Fatigue
A condition that causes changes in consciousness and affects information processing abilities.
Sensory Overload
A state where excessive sensory input can lead to changes in perception, often seen in crowded or noisy environments.
Sensory Deprivation
A condition that occurs when sensory input is minimal, which can lead to hallucinations or altered states.
Meditation
A practice that can alter consciousness by promoting relaxation and mental clarity.
Hypnosis
A state of focused attention and increased suggestibility, often used for therapeutic purposes.
REM Sleep
Rapid Eye Movement sleep, characterized by high brain activity, vivid dreams, and temporary body paralysis.
Non-REM Sleep
Stages of sleep that include deep sleep and restorative processes, encompassing stages 1 through 4.
Sleep Cycle
The progression through various stages of sleep, including alternating between REM and non-REM sleep.
Memory Consolidation
The process of strengthening memories during sleep, particularly in REM sleep.
Insomnia
Difficulty falling or staying asleep, or waking too early, that causes daytime fatigue.
Somnambulism
Also known as sleepwalking, occurs during deep sleep, where individuals can move but are not awake.
Night Terrors
A condition in which a person experiences intense fear and thrashing during stage four sleep without remembering it.
Narcolepsy
A disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks during waking hours.
Sleep Apnea
A serious disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep, often leading to low oxygen levels.
