Common Mathematical Parent Functions

A collection of flashcards defining the equations of fundamental parent functions as presented in the lecture notes.

Linear

$$y = x$$

Quadratic

$$y = x^2$$

Cubic

$$y = x^3$$

Rational (odd)

$y = \frac{1}{x}$ or $y = \frac{1}{x^n}$ where $n$ is odd

Rational (even)

$y = \frac{1}{x^2}$ or $y = \frac{1}{x^n}$ where $n$ is even

Square Root

y=sqrt(x)

Cube Root

y = \text{\sqrt[3]{x}}

Absolute Value

$$y = |x|$$

Exponential

$y = e^x$ or $y = a^x$

Logarithmic

y = \text{\ln(x)} or $y = \text{log}_a(x)$

Sine

y = \text{\sin(x)}

Cosine

y = \text{\cos(x)}

Tangent

y = \text{\tan(x)}

Arctangent

y = \text{\tan}^{-1}(x) or $y = \text{arctan}(x)$
