Crime
An offence which is punishable by law, for example, stealing or murder.
Punishment
Something legally done to somebody as a result of being found guilty of breaking the law.
Evil
The opposite of good; a force or the personification of a negative power seen in many traditions as destructive and against God.
Intention
The plan that someone has before they act.
Sharia Law
Islamic law based on the Qur'an, Hadith, and Sunnah.
Hate crimes
Crimes, often including violence, that are usually targeted at a person because of their race, religion, sexuality, disability, or gender.
Retribution
An aim of punishment that means to get your own back; an 'eye for an eye' approach.
Deterrence
An aim of punishment intended to put people off committing crimes and stop the criminal from doing it again.
Reformation
An aim of punishment to change someone's behaviour for the better.
Free will
The ability of people to make decisions for themselves without constraint.
Suffering
Living with unpleasant conditions.
Prison
A secure building where offenders are kept for a period of time.
Corporal punishment
Punishment of an offender by causing them pain; this is illegal in the UK.
Community service
Punishing offenders by making them do unpaid work in the community.
Forgiveness
Showing mercy and pardoning someone for what they have done wrong.
Death penalty
Capital punishment, where the offender is put to death for their crimes.
Principle of utility
The idea that an action is right if it promotes maximum happiness for the maximum number of people.
Sanctity of life
The idea that all life is holy as it is created and loved by God; human life should not be misused or abused.
Zakah
A Muslim duty to give to charity, supporting the community to help those in need.
Ummah
The whole Muslim community that shares identity and care for those in need.
Monotheism
The belief in only one God, a core tenet of Christianity.
Omnipotent
The nature of God as all-powerful.
Omni-benevolent
The nature of God as all-loving, showing care for everyone.
Omniscient
The nature of God as all-knowing and everywhere (omni-present).
Transcendent
The nature of God as being beyond human understanding.
Just
The nature of God as fair, acting as a judge who rewards the good and punishes the bad.
Holy Trinity
The Christian belief that God can be understood in three ways: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
Ex nihilo
A term meaning 'out of nothing,' referring to how God created the world.
Stewardship
The idea that God put mankind in charge of looking after the world.
Original Sin
The state of evil and suffering that entered creation when Adam and Eve used their free-will to rebel against God.
Incarnation
The Christian belief that when Jesus was born, he was God in human form.
Agape
A key teaching of Jesus meaning 'love'; as in "love thy neighbour as thyself."
Messiah
Hebrew for 'anointed one'; Christians believe Jesus is the Messiah who brings salvation.
Atonement
The belief that Jesus' death paid for the sins of all human beings who accept him.
Resurrection
The event of Jesus rising from the dead 3 days after his crucifixion on Easter Sunday.
Ascension
The event where Jesus was taken up into heaven 40 days after his resurrection.
Purgatory
A Roman Catholic belief in a place where the soul is made good for heaven.
Salvation
The process of being saved from sin, which Christians believe can be achieved through law, grace, or the Spirit.
