One-off production
Refers to unique, individually designed and manufactured products
Batch Production
the manufacture of groups of products
Mass production
highly organised manufacturing system of large quantities of products
Continuous Production
high-volume production that involves the use of highly automated machinery to manufacture products and materials 24/7
Quality control (QC)
monitoring, checking and testing procedures used throughout production
Quality assurance (QA)
a system of procedures and policies to ensure products are 'right first time and every time', to eliminate faulty products and ensure customer satisfaction
Total Quality Management [TQM)
Aims to remove waste and make products right first time by continuous improvement
ISO 9000
guides organisations in satisfying the requirements of customers and other stakeholders who interact with its products or services.
Production, planning and control (PPC) - Computer System
A system used to coordinate production, materials, components, suppliers and customers.
Production, planning and control (PPC) - Logistics
the organisation of the flow of all the elements involved in manufacturing and marketing products
Master production schedule (MPS)
MPS software carries out several co-ordinated PPC functions in a JiT environment including the following:
● Availability of parts and materials
● Scheduling of machines and people
● Co-ordinating suppliers and customers
Automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS)
a computerised warehousing system for the storage, sorting and retrieval of components, materials and products
Automatic guided vehicle (AGV)
computer-operated, driverless vehicle for moving materials and parts in factories.
Flexible manufacturing system (FMS)
production mainly using CNC and robot-based cells to carry out bespoke and batch production to suit demand
Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) - Modular/cell production
CNC machines, robots and AGVs organised in groups for efficient, flexible manufacturing
Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) - Single minute exchangedie (SMED)
machine die/mould that can be changed in less than ten minutes
Lean Manufacturing JIT
means that materials or components are delivered only as required for manufacture in response to orders. It is central to much modern manufacturing
Lean manufacturing
reducing waste in manufacture, such as time, materials or idle machines
uses SixSigma, Kaizen and Jidoka
Standardised parts
parts made to a common, interchangeable, standard
Quick response manufacturing (QRM)
the use of mainly computer based technologies to make low-volume, customised products efficiently and competitively
Product data management (PDM)
is a centralised, secure system used to synchronise all the data associated with a product
Enterprise resource planning (ERP)
computer-based system that integrates all the aspects of the development, manufacture and marketing of products in a single, unified database
Concurrent manufacturing
a method of manufacturing which utilises the parallel processing of tasks to bring products to the market more quickly
Quality function deployment (QFD)
a quality assurance system, used in association with concurrent manufacturing, which employs a 'house of quality' graphical matrix to assist in targeting the complete satisfaction of consumers
