What is the name of the model?
The North America Model of Wildlife Conservation
Name the Models Seven Pillars
Wildlife as a Public Trust Resource
Elimination of Markets for Game
Allocation of Wildlife by Law
Kill only for Legitimate Purpose
Wildlife as International Resource
Science-based Wildlife Policy
Democracy of Hunting
Describe the first pillar: Wildlife as a Public Trust Resource
Wildlife, fish and other natural resources cannot be privately owned as it should not be owned by anyone and is held by the government in trust for the benefit of present and future generations.
Describe the second pillar: Elimination of Markets for Game
Regulated hunting and trade of only the overabundant game species
Describe the third pillar: Allocation of Wildlife by Law
Access and use of wildlife is regulated by which decisions are made as to what species can be hunted, what species cannot be harmed due to their imperiled status
Describe the fourth pillar: Kill Only for Legitimate Purpose
Killing wildlife for frivolous reasons is unacceptable and considered as “useless” slaughter. It must have practical purpose. Hunters must use any game they kill without waste, by harvesting as much meat from legally killed game as possible.
Describe the fifth pillar: Wildlife as International Resource
Migratory wildlife species that migrate across borders must be protected by the cooperation of neighboring countries and nations.
Describe the sixth pillar: Science-based Wildlife Policy
Management of diverse species and conservation from the integration of biological and social sciences.
Describe the seventh pillar: Democracy of Hunting
The opportunity to hunt is restricted to those who have special status such as land ownership, wealth, or other privileges.
What was the main purpose from Reading Assignment #2?
The opposing views about whether the term “species” is a mental construct from our human minds for our convenience or if they actually exist naturally in reality.
What was the second motive presented in Assignment #2?
The discussion about evolutionary theory and if it is a continuous change over a long period of time or if it is a more rapid change in a much shorter period of time.
What perspective did the author side with and who had the opposing perspective?
The author sided with Mayr’s view and opposed Haldane’s perspective
What was the evidence the author provided for his argument?
Different cultures around the world, such as the Papuans in New Guinea, the Kalam community, and the Tzeltal community in Mexico, were researched by their taxonomy system by naming/grouping and how they identified different organisms. There was moderate connection or alignment with the Linnaeus scientific system from these cultures. There was also fossil evidence to suggest they are biological units in nature since the morphological factors of these organisms do not change over millions of years.
What is punctuated equilibrium?
an evolutionary biology theory proposing that species experience long periods of stability with little to no morphological change, interrupted by brief, rapid periods of significant evolutionary change and speciation.
What was concluded at the end of Reading Assignment #2?
Summarize all key points. Last statement: “Species are the units of nature’s morphology.”
