One-to-many communication
A communication model where one source transmits messages to many receivers, typical of traditional mass media.
Many-to-many communication
A communication model where multiple participants can exchange information with one another, typical of new digital mass media.
Traditional mass media
Old media formats including books, newspapers, magazines, film, sound recordings, radio, and television.
New mass media
Any media delivered digitally, such as blog articles, music, and podcasts, characterized by many-to-many communication.
Proliferation of digital platforms
The rapid increase and spread of digital platforms used for media consumption.
Catch-up services
Additional services provided by broadcasters allowing users to watch content after the original broadcast time.
Circulations
The number of copies of a publication, like a newspaper or magazine, distributed or sold.
Editorial
A leading article or piece expressing the opinion of the editors or publishers; also refers to the department responsible for preparing content.
Peak time (or Prime-time)
The time of day when the largest number of people are watching television or listening to the radio.
To host / to front / to anchor
To serve as the main presenter or lead for a television or radio program.
Footage
Recorded film or video material, often referring to specific scenes or sequences.
Vox-pop interviews
Street interviews designed to capture the "voice of the people" regarding public opinion.
Infotainment
A type of media content that combines information and educational material with entertainment.
Docudrama
A film or television program that presents a dramatized version of real events or documentary facts.
Couch potatoes
A term for individuals who lead a sedentary lifestyle, typically spent watching large amounts of television.
To zap
The act of quickly switching between television channels using a remote control.
Tabloid
A type of newspaper characterized by sensationalist reporting or "yellow journalism," often with a smaller page size.
Broadsheet
A serious, high-quality, and professionally oriented newspaper format.
Intrusive reporting techniques
Aggressive methods of gathering news, such as those used by paparazzi or bugging rooms.
Door stepping
An attempt to obtain an interview or on-camera report from a subject without a prior appointment, typically by confronting them in a public place or at their home.
To bug rooms
The act of installing hidden microphones or electronic devices (bugs) to secretly listen to conversations.
News flash
A brief, urgent news broadcast used to report an breaking event.
Media hype
An event or story that receives an excessive or exaggerated amount of media attention.
