Motor program
A sequence of general instructions that a student's nervous and muscular systems must carry out for the successful production of the movements that make up a skill.
Retention
Refers to the persistence or durability over time of something learned.
Cognitive Stage
The initial stage of the learning process characterized by considerable self-talk and low confidence.
Associative Stage
The intermediate stage of learning where the student begins to practice the skill and demonstrates smoother tempo and less need for corrective feedback.
Autonomous Stage
The final stage of learning marked by high confidence and minimal self-talk.
Intrinsic Feedback
Feedback that arises as a natural consequence of the performed skill, coming solely from the student.
Transfer Practice
Repetitious practice used to learn and improve skills in a non-playing context.
Practice Test
A test where the student performs the skill in a slightly different way than it was originally practiced.
Learning
A change in a person's capability inferred from performance characteristics.
Developmental movement change
The characteristics of a person's movement development, including aspects such as cumulative, sequential, and individual change.
Active Listening
When a teacher listens to the student, engages with questions, and shows understanding by responding.
SMART Goals
An acronym for goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-oriented.
Effective Instructional Communication
Includes immediacy, communication style, clarity, humor, and relevancy in conveying information.
Feedback
Information given to learners about performance outcomes or processes to help improve skills.
Discovery Learning
An approach that emphasizes exploration and experiential learning to enhance skill acquisition.
Skill Transfer
The process of applying knowledge or skills learned in one context to another context.
