Minoan Civilization
A civilization located on the Island of Crete known for trading and importing goods.
Mycenaean Civilization
A civilization located from Central Asia to the Balkan Peninsula that took over following the demise of the Minoans.
Minoan Naval Power
The advantage that allowed Minoans to dominate the sea due to their large navy.
Social Characteristics Contrast
The Minoans were mostly peaceful, whereas the Mycenaeans were warriors.
Egyptian Similarity
Both the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations were similar to Egypt because their fortresses housed tombs as the Egyptian pyramids did.
Chinese Similarity
The Mycenaean people were similar to China in that they both built large walls for protection.
Sea Dominion
The control of the sea which allowed civilizations to control what goods were bought and sold to become wealthier.
The Dark Ages
The era after the collapse of the Bronze Age in which written language fell out of use and events were not recorded.
Storytelling
The method by which information and mythology were passed down during the Dark Ages.
City-states
Organized communities, such as those formed by Greeks to defend themselves against the invading Dorians.
Greek Language
The common language adopted by the people so everyone could understand the stories from storytellers.
Homer
A well-known storyteller regarded as the greatest Greek poet of all time.
Epic Poem
A type of poem that tells about the adventures of a main character, the hero.
The Iliad
Homer's story about the war between Greece and Troy that lasted for 10 years.
The Odyssey
Homer's story about the journey of Odysseus trying to return home after war.
Classical Age Major Cities
The two major cities during this era of Greece were Athens and Sparta.
Democracy
The political system formed in Athens after King Theseus abolished the monarchy.
Polis
The specific term used for Greek city-states.
Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle
The three great Greek philosophers whose teachings influenced political philosophy.
Property in Ancient Greece
The classification given to women, children, and slaves.
Athenian Citizens
Only men were considered citizens in Ancient Athens.
Athenian Political Goal
To give each citizen a voice in how he was governed and how the laws of the times would affect him.
Spartan Characteristics

A period of 6 years of peace that occurred between the Peloponnesian wars.

A conflict between Athens and Sparta specifically regarding trade routes.
