What position should the non-receiving player on the receiving team be in during the serve?

Net volley position

What should the receiving player do?

Hit a deep return of service shot and move forward to net volley position side-by-side with their partner. This is the ideal attack position for the receiving team as both players are in the best position to win the point.

What shots may the receiving team in the net volley position utilize to win back the serve?

Overhead slams, drive shots, “dink” or drop shot

How is the serve made?

Diagonally cross court clearing the non-volley zone, cannot land in the non-volley zone and must clear this zone. Server cannot bounce the ball and then serve.

Volley

Hit the ball in the air without first letting it bounce

When can a volley be made?

If the player’s feet are behind the non-volley zone line. It is a fault if the player steps over the line on their volley follow through

Faults

Hitting ball out of bounds, not clearing net, stepping into the non-volley zone to volley, volleying before it has bounced once on each side of the net

Double bounce rule

Each team must play their first shot off the bounce. The receiving team must let the serve bounce, and the serving team must let the return of the serve bounce before playing it. After this occurs, the ball can be either volleyed or played off the bounce.

Non-volley zone

Player cannot volley the ball here. They can only hit the ball here if the ball bounces in the non-volley zone first.
