What are the body’s first line defence mechanisms against pathogens?
Skin (acts as a barrier to pathogens), nose (hairs and mucus trap pathogens), trachea and bronchi (secrete mucus to trap pathogens and is swept out by cilia), and stomach (produces hydrochloric acid which kills pathogens).
How do phagocytes attack pathogens?
They engulf and digest pathogens marked by antibodies.
How do lymphocytes attack pathogens?
Produce antibodies which flow around blood stream and attach onto foreign antibodies, and produce antitoxins which neutralise toxins produced by bacteria.
What are the two types of white blood cell?
Phagocytes and lymphocytes.
